As I drive towards Mt. Monadnock on my way to work each day, I think about the many trails that lead to the top of the mountain. What trail is the best to travel on? Do I want the fastest route, or the one that is slow and steady? The goal, no matter which we choose, is to eventually reach the top of the mountain.

The success of reaching the top and achieving a goal is what we want for your children. However, like climbing the mountain, there are many ways to get there. We do not want to force a child up a particular trail, but rather guide, support, and open doors for them. When children are little, they are like sponges, absorbing everything that comes their way. Our job as parents and teachers is to help them on their journey to greater learning and independence.

Learning how to be independent and to do things on their own is so big for children. To pull on one’s shoes and socks, to zip or button ones coat. To be able to respect another child’s work space. To help another child ask for help. To comfort a friend who is sad. To foster a joy in learning. To develop a sense of order, concentration, coordination and independence upon which all learning is possible. We try to take all of these things into account. A child may not be the fastest and there may be detours along the way, but with us, the goal is to reach the top of their mountain.

Our promise to you is to be open. To be caring. To encourage the sense of wonder in your child. To recognize the teachable moments. To nourish so that your child will flourish. To help them find their way to the top of the mountain.

The Keene Montessori School has been part of this community for many years. We invite you to come visit us, ask questions, and hope that one day your son or daughter will be among our numerous alumni who have such fond memories of their time here when they were little.
